CHAPTER 10
Solana was amazed how the people of Machu Picchu changed after the pumas became her friends. They must have thought they would be cursed with bad luck if she wasnât happy. So they showered her, Jayden and Shekinah with gifts, food and supplies. Even the pumas were fed fresh llama meat. Once the people found out she wanted the video game system, they pushed the boy, Ben, to hand it over. Solana felt bad for him, but she knew it was her best chance at finding her family again.
Despite her being glorified, Solana told the king she would be leaving to find her family. He was disappointed, and his queen was angry, but Solana had won the hearts of the people and could no longer be held prisoner.
She was finally able to connect with Jose for an online chat. He told her after his father was killed, Solanaâs father went berserk. He stabbed a guy who had a machine gun and then grabbed his gun. So all that machine gun fire had actually been her father. Then Jose told her that her grandmother had been killed. Solana was crushed, but she was selfishly thrilled both her parents were alive. Jose went on to tell her all the dogs and llamas were killed or ran off and disappeared. They managed to save the horses, though. They searched Cusco for Solana but only found her horse and eventually made the hard decision to leave, assuming that she was dead. They traveled north avoiding large cities, and they had just arrived at Lake JunÃn in Peru when Solana contacted them. They found a place near the lake to wait for Solana.
As Solana, Shekinah and Jayden prepared to leave, Isabella approached Solana and handed her the moon shoes. âTake care of that baby.â
The Jeep was too small for the pumas and all their gear, so they were given an old pickup truck instead. Solana, the pumas and gear all squeezed into the truck bed.
They traveled all day heading north. The heat was stifling even with the wind. Solana opened the canteen of water, took a long drink, and poured some over her head. She poured the rest of the water in a bowl for the pumas. The female puma got up and drank. Solana touched the puma, sensing its happiness. Solana wondered why she could feel the pumasâ feelings. They seemed to sense hers as well. Shekinah told her the Intihuatana Stone must have opened her mind to a new level. She said it was a gift from the spirits. Jayden thought it was more likely that she was evolving in some strange new way, especially since she was pregnant. He thought the pregnancy might make her more susceptible to changes. Solana thought it was weird and scary, but she liked being able to sense their thoughts.
A beep came from her backpack. She unzipped a duffle bag and pulled out the video game system. She tapped the screen to get to the list of online players and saw only one username, wildfire626, on the list.
